I was happy to be leaving HK, excited as I was to visit London for the first time. It was an early flight & I was out at the airport at 5am. But karma has its mysterious outcomes & I was given an upgrade to the new Qantas 'Premium Economy' which had the big recliner seats, better food, & even real champagne flutes. I'd met a lovely Scottish guy at the airport who happened to be living in Manly & we had a good chat along the way. But I did get seated next to someone who obviously had no idea of the loudness of her voice, especially when watching the Mr Bean episodes she so loved.
I hadn't booked accommodation expecting the flight to arrive at its designated 1:30pm, & so with plenty of time to check things out. But the flight was delayed by nearly 3 hours & the information desk at the airport wanted to charge for hotel details - bugger off! But I did find a little 2-star place called the Piccolino Hotel out at Bayswater near Hyde Park that was quite lovely for the price. And so I settled there for more than a few days as a base to enjoy the city.
